Tutorial Creating Textured/Painterly Mountains in Photoshop

OK, in my January '09 Map Challenge thread some one asked for a tutorial on how I do my mountains. So here it is.

This is my first tutorial so please be gentle, though I definitely would like some feedback.

Here is a small image of a mountain completed with the tutorial - just so you get an idea.

Thank you! I'm going to be trying to adapt this to PhotoPaint. Your instructions were very clear and I think will transfer well.

Cool idea. I've experimented with this a bit, but I'll give your tut a run and see how it works.

Here we go. Just grabbed a handful of your ideas and gave it a whirl.
There's no thought behind this and it's using standard PS textures and effects.
I wanted a blurry land map below the floating island, the water is just because i didn't have anything handy.

That's pretty cool - get some nice textures on there and it will really 'pop' I think.

Did you use noise for the falls or some kind of scatter or splatter brush?

1px brush with a lot of scatter and color noise.
