How to depict reefs?
I am looking for suggestions on how to depict ocean reefs in a continent scale map.

I color the depth of the water in various ways. There is the sand which makes the water an aqua color. A bit farther in you get rocks which sea weeds grow on which are usually dark in color so I have that mottled and then far out I make it a flat blue with some ripple on it. I go for realistic satellite style but if you were to go with something else then it could be anything. Any of my big terrain maps could be an example like the MeDem map for instance. Difficult to say definitively what to do with stuff thats underwater.
I use a custom-made brush in Illustrator. It ends up looking like a series of m's all run together, with the humps of the m's facing the open ocean and the points facing the lagoon. You can see it (not very well, however, due the poor resolution) on the maps I've attached.
