Welcome Aboard! ..and for posting a map in your intro thread, have some 'rep' *bonk*

I think you'll find everyone has a somewhat different method/scheme for naming. For me its usually a 'fly by night' kind of thing. Combining different pieces of words, reversing words, etc.

    Welcome to the Guild!

For naming conventions, a brief history of Etymology may be of interest:

And of course TOPONYMY, or how places get their name:

Finally I gave a BIG SPIEL way back when I first came to the guild on place names, and can be found in this post here:

Pretty stylish for a CC3 map. The country borders are a bit loud but that's no real big thing really. I'm betting that within a few months you'll be knockin this style out of the park. Good job. As for naming stuff, the geology of a place can go a long way (Spooky Forest, High Hill, Silver Glade, etc). I also try to think of a certain language like French or Polynesian or something and just make stuff up that sounds French or Polynesian. When all else fails I use a name generator then change it up to suit me.

If you *really* want to go whole-hog on getting consistent fantasy names, you should check out "conlangs" ie. constructed languages.

    http://www.zompist.com/kit.html

This is a great guide on getting started.

A "conlang" is a constructed language, like Tolkien's Sindarin or Klingon. Good conlangs follow certain rules that make them internally consistent and create a sense of culture.

There are forums for conlangs just as their is a Cartographer's guild for fantasy maps
