Thread: NOAA Photo Library

    Post NOAA Photo Library

I just discovered the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Photo Library. http://www.photolib.noaa.gov/index.html

I haven't seen much of it yet, but my eye was drawn by some old photos of sailing vessels in their "Sailing for Science" catalog. They might make nice reference for decorative elements.

Here are the terms of use as given on the website:
    Restrictions for Using NOAA Images

Most NOAA photos and slides are in the public domain and CANNOT be copyrighted.

Although at present, no fee is charged for using the photos credit MUST be given to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/Department of Commerce unless otherwise instructed to give credit to the photographer or other source.

That looks really superb. I tried a photo or two but I could not find the copyright info. If some of them are copyright and others are not then how can you tell. It seems odd if they are saying you have to credit a public domain picture. Good form agreed, but you cant impose anything on a public domain work. I definitely could have done with these a year or two ago when writing my terrain app.

Like almost all works of the United States government, these NOAA images are automatically in the public domain, unless they say otherwise (meaning they were not made by a NOAA employee):
