Thread: Flat map to globe

    Post Flat map to globe

    Hello all,

I have several binders of campaign materials that consist of over a decade of gaming in my home spun setting. As if trying to compile it all into something consistent and respectable looking wasn't hard enough... I can't help but want to attempt a special keepsake. Has anyone had any experiance trying to create a globe form of any of their maps? Initially I thought I could try redrawing my world as a series of adjacent pointed elipses (I wish I new the formal name for that map style), and then form them onto a sphere. It's not a serious endeavor at this point, more of a novelty at the back of my mind while I go through GIMP tutorials and try to remember old details that were left out of my notes. I'm sure all the relative scale issues of curving the maps would be frustrating. A cloth map might be an easier alternative

Any decent 3D application will wrap a flat picture around a sphere. You can then roate the sphere to any angle and view your map as a globe, or render different views for your players' reference.

Blender is free and moderately easy.
    Bryce is cheap and easy.
3DS Max is $$$ and difficult (heh).
    I'm sure there are others.

If you're talking about a real globe sitting on your desk then I vaguely remember someone doing that here once but dang if I can find it.

Another way to make a globe with your map is to use a combination of Fractal terrains - CC3 - Wilbur.

I made such a globe with the forgotten realms map i made.

A globe you say? Casts resurrect thread on my very first post here on the guild: http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=725
Chris Wayan is very talented sculptor and artist (if a bit unusual). He has created globes for many of his worlds and painted them. Take a look at:

    Dubia http://www.worlddreambank.org/D/DUBIA.HTM
    Mars Reborn http://www.worlddreambank.org/M/MRZ.HTM
    Venus Unveiled http://www.worlddreambank.org/V/VENUS.HTM
    Shiveria http://www.worlddreambank.org/S/SHIVERIA.HTM
    Seapole http://www.worlddreambank.org/S/SEAPOLE.HTM

I would ask him for pointers on how to create your own globes, he can be reached at wdreamb@yahoo.com Good luck.
