Post Greetings from a total amateur

Hello there. I came here a man in desperate need, like a slave crawling out of the desert seeking water. Having tried AutoRealm (terrible) and Fractal Mapper (didn't have what I wanted) I followed a link here from Google and was very, very impressed with the tutorials I found. I downloaded GIMP and started following the extensive GIMP artistic map tutorial here, and was surprised at how easy it is to do this kind of stuff.

You guys have some great stuff here. I look forward to being a part of this community.

    Welcome to the guild Gregorus!
Be sure to post up a work in progress (WIP) once you feel confident enough. It's the best way to learn as you can get feedback.

Greetings, Total Amateur! -- signed, Accomplished Guru.

What kind of maps are you making?

I've been working on a campaign setting as a possible alternative campaign to run with my D&D 4e group. Something with a strong Roman feel, complete with slaves and complex laws to govern them, some Crusades-type holy war politics with the dragonborn (There is but one God and Bahamut is his prophet!) and a good bit of Lovecraftian horror tossed in for good measure.

So what I'll be making in GIMP are some maps for each continent/archipelago and then stitching them together to create one big world map. I'll have to figure out political boundaries and some cool symbols later on but for now I'll be working on topography.
