These should inspire some castle creations:

Great link. I'm happy to have doe 3 from 10 (Malbork, Prague and the one in a cave). The one in the cave is particularly bizarre, and was the lair of a robber bandit who held out for years!

I'm pretty sure the one in the cave also was featured on an episode of Ghost Hunters.

That castle is a ruin... yet... for the fantasy castle designers who sometimes believe their creation is completely mad... there is the Montségur castle in the Pyrénées mountains (Southern France, near Spanish border).

I visited it and it's quite madness to imagine they built a castle there.
(the castle is actually also famous because it is the last fortified place to fall, after a long siege, during the Albigensian crusade. And the fall officially ended the crusade.

The castle is quite small, really. During the siege, people built houses outside, between the walls and the steep slope (watch your steps)

So sometimes... your fantasy castle on a mountain spike... isn't such a crazy idea.
