Thread: November Entry - Large Hadron Collider Goes Crazy

Wip November Entry - Large Hadron Collider Goes Crazy

I'm very glad I've found this site; I've been without a map contest for far too long.

Anyway, my idea is that the Large Hadron Collider they got up and running last year (or was it early this year?) ends up being just as bad as all those conspiracy theorists &c. say it is, and forms a black hole, which proceeds to eat Switzerland.

So far, I've taken a satellite image (it is amazingly hard to find a good image of a large scale centered on Geneva) and added a black hole-type effect. I'm planning to add a whole bunch of text over it, showing evacuations, descriptions of the effects of the black hole, labels, &c., to make it look like something from a briefing.
    Thoughts?

Excellent idea for a map! And very fitting indeed for the challenge.

It was started up last year and then shut down again. They have beam in again now and are looking to get it all the way round by the end of the month or early December.

There's a small (!) thread on this and similar subjects:

I'm really looking forward to seeing this one

I think they look pretty cool. If you wanted to take it further you might pull them into a tighter spiral around the center of the hole, make them darker and stormier and throw in some lightning. In any event, highlighting a spiral pattern caused by the air being sucked in would really emphasise the nature of the catastrophe.

That's a good idea about the storms. I'll try it out.

How large is the native image euio? Can you export a full-sized one so we can see it as it is intended to be seen?

Unfortunately, that's the full size. I couldn't find a larger satellite image centered on the area.

If you know anywhere to find good satellite photos, please tell me.

Unfortunately all I can suggest is that you stitch one together from Google or one of the other tools. But that would look patchy unless you duplicated the elements independently. Unless you're used to doing that, you'd be hard-put to get it done on a 2k x 2k image in the ten days remaining until the challenge ends. I'm used to doing it on a much smaller scale (city sized) but regional is completely new to me when it comes to modeling something existing.

    Changing tack.

I'm done with the satellite image part. All labels, borders, highlighted areas, &c. will be on the map on the left.
