Question What other hobbies do you have?

I am curious to know what hobbies surround all of you cartographers!
As for me, my most predictable hobby is collecting D&D materials (maps baby). I don't play, but I have an extensive collection of pre-1985 stuff including most everything published by the judges guild, everything published for the greyhawk setting (including some pieces owned by the TSR employees), and every world setting produced by TSR (and a few by WoTC). It is not something I get to show off often!
    My other hobbies are:
Book (fantasy and SF) collecting (first edition hardbacks).
Coin collecting (my biggest time suck after maps).
    An occassional CRPG
And chasing my kids around (they win out even over maps)

So, what do you guys do when not making maps?

I collect maps (no surprise there), I also collect masks. I love the outdoors and camping with the least possible equipment (again a map link of sorts), I like history (another map connection) and science fiction and gardening. I see myself as a polymath...my interests are very widespread, and these explanations are pretty much the tip of a big iceberg. I suppose understanding the human condition would come close to my main hobby.

Ah... minimalist camping... you don't have kids, do you? I love camping, but with the (young) kids, its the pop up trailer with all its lovely comforts! History has always been an interest of mine also.
In all honesty, I think most of us have a LOT of hobbies (I did not mention collecting swords, collecting miniature castles, pinball machine and casino game collecting, and writing). Those are 'back burner' hobbies!

Wow--Richard, I think your hobby is collecting in general!

My hobbies are reading classics (novels & poetry) & theology, writing, playing my once-a-week rpg, and woodworking--although on that last I tend to do more home improvement & repair for friends than anything "fun" like making a chair. (I don't mind; I like helping them: working on other peoples' houses is always more fun that on your own!). Otherwise I am a dad & husband--so I don't have time for much else!

Post Hobbies? What's that - I work to death...

Sure I have hobbies, but when to "play with hobbies" is very rare these days.

I run a full-time digital graphics shop with too much work and no other employees - I do my best to not work the daytime job after 5 pm, but sometimes that's impossible.

I am working from 7pm to midnight everyday working on the website and marketing, as well as designing maps and products for Gamer Printshop - I've been doing that for nearly 4 months straight (so no hobbies for 4 months!)

I have a weekend gaming session, currently a player and not a DM, but the campaign sucks and we're starting to look at what to play instead...

I love creating maps, creating 3D models for maps and other uses. I love to create 3D comics when I have the time - not for over a year. I am an insatiable reader - SciFi, fantasy, RPG manuals, history, theology, mythology, etymology (I love languages), science... I write poetry (not in years), short stories and story development.

But all that's in the past, at least until I can get Gamer Printshop to take-over my daytime job and do that full time. Then maybe I could get to my hobbies.

I play with my German Shepherd, Suiko (unmarried, so this is my "kid")

I used to be a body piercer and industrial music DJ. I still collect and listen to industrial music and am a body art afficionado.

But my primary hobby is fiddling with RPGs. I play a bunch, I own over 150 of them, and I modify them all. I've also written a few and a lot of supplements for them.

I am clearly a 'collecting' personality, always have been!

I have too many hobbies, and am lucky to have a job that is also built around my hobby.

    • I play drums in a local rock band (http://www.3rdgearband.com)
    • I do graphics work often (3d and 2d)
    • I enjoy flying and flight simulators and develop aircraft for flight sims both hobby and professionally (currently developing a 3d cockpit for the V-22 Osprey)
    • I collect the occasional comic book
    • I'm currently building a portable arcade built around MAME (look it up )
    • I play computer games a lot, including the occasional MMO (Wow, Guild Wars, and currently Fable)
    • I'm a modeller/artist for a currently un-mentionable software product that I'm sure will find its way to you guys
    • I'm a webmaster/web designer, and programmer for far too many websites scattered across the web

    whew...that was a long list

Richardb you mention the old Judge's Guild products. I am about to start Dming a campaign set in the re-made Wilderlands of High Fantasy setting using the Iron Heroes D20 system. I suppose that covers one of my hobbies. Others include playing guitar, creative writing, 3d modelling, Karate (Hoping to compete in the world champs in Switzerland next year) and watching my favourite sport (rugby). Go Springboks.

All of these can only be slotted into the gaps left by marriage, fatherhood and full-time legal practice.

The new product is really quite faithful to the original, with slightly updated graphics and better descriptions. I still like the old style simple maps, however. I think that the wild feel of the wilderlands setting is really one of the best in the industry to this day for open D&D play that is character based.
