GIMP is a really great program for being an open-source thing. Just a word of caution, though... Once your files get past about 20 layers and a few thousand pixels in either direction, the program becomes almost unrunable. My recent Nesspressen map ended up being 6,900 x 5,400ish with about 40 layers, and every action I did took at least five minutes on a dual-core laptop with 2.5 gig of ram.

Have fun, though, as GIMP can do a whole lot!

    thanks xequar,
it is a quite functional open-source photo tool. i like it. the time issue i'm used to...sometimes i run GIS spatial queries, or labeling functions, on large maps, and it may run for 30/40 minutes or more. and i'm using a 4gig RAM, 64-bit phenom x3, with ATI Radeon graphics. it warped that globe image in less than 1 minute. when i send it to multiple tiles, it slows much more though. i can't get it to spin the globe, any tricks to that animation?

And that was rather insulting for an attempt at a compliment.

Hai> I think that's someone saying "Aren't Open Source usually janky bug-filled half-assed things? WOW This thing is GREAT!"

It looks to me like he's saying that FOSS is inherently inferior to proprietary software and I happen to find that very insulting.

However you choose to interpret it, it is time to drop it as this is going nowhere.
