Post The best free software for a noob ?

Hey there ^^ I'm a poor little french who really needs help ='( I'm only 17 and so I can't buy anything on the Internet, and the matter is that I want to start mapping... so I need a good software (easy to use, of course :p ) and FREE !
I went to the list but I don't really know what's good or bad... that's why I want to know what you think about it ? :p

And sorry for my english, it could be a little... "ugly" xD

Welcome and your English is just fine...

Try to get Gimp and Inkscape as a raster and a vector drawing application.

Dungeonforge is a free stamp / icon based mapping tool which is useful to have
    on hand.

For 3D there is sketchup from google which a few people use and also Blender 3D which is a really powerful 3D app, free but real hard to get into if your brave.

Post some maps when you have some

Welcome to the guild... Redrobes has given you some good advice I see.
Check out my City Designer 3 tutorials. See my fantasy (city) maps in this thread.

Actually ... as others have pointed out, you can do some good things with Paint, moreso with the new version delivered with Windows 7.
