    Question Hello and a question

    Hey guys!

I just registered here in hope I could show the maps I have made. However, they're almost all coloured versions of maps found in fantasy books (in other words; I did not create the world and its layout). Is it still OK to post them? In the Finished Maps thread, right?

Now here's a little about me. I'm 35 and live in Switzerland. I love reading fantasy books, and I love when it contains a map (it even used to be a criteria for choosing what I'd read). I think the first map I drew (India ink on tracing paper) was a from a collage of xerox copies of the maps contained in Terry Brooks's Shannara novels (back in 1997). I never finished it (I wish I could lay my hands on it though).

I have drawn some others since then, but my favourite is still the first digital colouring I did, of Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings. I'm currently working on a map of David & Leigh Eddings's Belgariad & Malloreon (I've actually been working on it for months, it's sometimes hard to find the time).

Thanks in advance for your answers, and I'm looking forward to browsing the gallery here.

    Cheers,
    Crooty :-)

    Welcome to the Guild!

Here is the kicker about your question. Are the maps recreations do by you, or are they merely colorized copies of the original black and white map? If you took the original, redrew and the colorized, that would be fine, but merely saving/scanning the black/white image and adding color, that is not I would think.

They're completely redrawn (I mean I use a scan as base layer in PS - I usually need to collage several maps - in order to get the shapes of the land and rivers right but you can't see any of it in the final map).
Here's a link to the Robin Hobb one I mentioned and maybe you can tell me if it's alright? http://crooty.deviantart.com/art/Rob...b-Map-10431866

    Thanks a bunch!

If it is a true recreation, then it is fine. We have lots of derivative works. See my own where I redo maps from WotC Published mods to allow people to print out Miniature scale versions for gaming.

That's really nice work. I started a Belgariad map but I never finished it either...I ran out of time because it was for a challenge contest that we have here every month. If you'd like to see it then it is here.

We'll agree to like each other's maps better than our own
