Hey, this is my first post, but I've been lurking around these forums for awhile, and checking out all of the cool maps. I'm not certain where everything goes though, exactly (so feel free to move or delete this thread if its inappropriately placed, mods).
Anyways, I was just wondering how anyone here would illustrate more difficult aspects of a geographic terrain.
Specifically things like Plateaus, Canyons, or "Wide" Mountain Ranges (though I'm also interested in illustrations of other geographic terrain that's generally uncommon).
Example: http://www.map-of-asia.us/c-asia-r786.gif
How would one go about drawing something similar to that? With the Iranian Plateau (which might as well be mountain ranges, visually), the "wide" mountains, and the Iranian Plateau (with the Himalayas and everything)? It seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to establish using a geographic, realistic cartographic style, but how would one accomplish this with a more "traditional" hand-drawn style?
Similarly, how would anyone tackle something like this?

The only map I've seen recently that roughly contains such elements in a hand-drawn style would have to be this one:

Any thoughts/comments/advice?
