I tried to make the bank nice and sandy. I figured they could use small boats like canoes to cross back and forth. Also east bank is kind of more of farmers and people related to outdoor activities, so they would be fine being independant. It is a fairly small river, and small canoes would be used often to reach the farms further upstream (notice there is no roads up to the farms). I figure getting eastside to westside wouldn't be that hard. A bridge would make river travel difficult unless it is a very tall bridge, which seemed to be beyond what the small town could build.

I like the style of this map.
