I'm toying around with the idea of using a monster as a terrain source. Here's the start of a modular tentacle monster.
The warp tool is so much freaking awesome.
I'm thinking about doing more modular monsters if this works out.

A tentacle monster emerging from Diomede Lake.

Now tell me this implementation isn't freaking sweet. :)
Step 0: Make Monster Parts. (50% completed)
Step 1: Pose Moster with modular parts. (Easy)
Step 2: Apply a Grid. (Very difficult to do in a modular way and have line up properly, probably better to apply the grid /after/ it's been posed.)
Step 3: Battle! (Fun!)
Neat idea! I have seen a few "inside the belly of the beast" battle maps, but that's about as far as I've seen it go. I am eager to see what you come up with: Perhaps on the back of a giant eagle? Wasn't there a level like that in the old Golden Axe game?
Here's the partially completed contact sheet for the body parts. Still need to draw the abdomen (side, bottom, front) and head (top, bottom, side, front), along with gore (possible)

That is a really neat idea! Rep coming your way :)
I'm not happy with how the head turned out. I envisioned some sort of cuttle-fish / squid / octopus hybrid, and the head just looks wrong when I provide a place to attach the tentacles. :/ Either disproportionately huge or too small.
I'm happy with the abdomen at this point, shape and color wise. I need to mock up the underbelly, and then sketch out a cut-away (belly-of-the-beast) view. Is this thing the size of the sky-scraper? If so, what denizens lurk in the nooks and crannies? I should create barnacles, at the very least. Maybe house-sized barnacles!
Here's the abdomen from the side.

Here's the stupid looking head from the top. This is where my drawing skills fail me, I wound up reusing bits and pieces instead of drawing new. The tactic doesn't look bad on the tentacles, but it looks terrible on the head. I wish I knew someone who knew cuttlefish/squid/octopus anatomy better! :) I also don't know about the eyes. I could draw "angry-eyebrows" on him, maybe. He looks sort of goofy.

Looks like... the DOOM SNAIL!

I made his body a little sleeker and added mouth tentacles. The theory being that a user would add tentacles "underneath" the mouth .
Also reworked the eyes, but they still seem a little retarded. :?
That just sounds dirty. :)
I never released the version with the cracked ice, but you can find the "finished" versions of Lake Diomede in Day, Night, and No Camp here:
My Album
Here's a more complete side view with head, abdomen, and "starter" mouth tentacles. Stick the other tentacles "underneath" the starters.
I need to add barnacles to this view of all the parts. Then add in a cross section for the belly of the beast.

I still need to fix some segmentation issues, and I'll never be happy with the eyes. He just looks too cute/goody.
Now I should make up an environment battle-mat to go along with him, maybe a side view of Diomede lake...
