I'm trying to Figure out how to mask the space around text and how to overlay the map image on a background.
EDIT:
For the former, see my tutorial in sig about layer masks for GIMP. In the layer mask, white = translucent, black = obscures) On the layer with your imported image, full the layer mask with white, and then in places where you want to "erase" the trees and let some of the background show through, paint in with black(or some shade of grey) and it will "erase" that part of the original image. However, since you are using a layer mask, you still have your original image 100% intact(ie, this i better than using the eraser tool which mutilates your original image)
Can you take this image from CC and save it as a PNG instead, removing the white background? If so, then you would just put a texture underneath as the bottom layer. If not...hmmmm.... Put the texture on the bottom most layer and set the original image layer to multiple.

Here is an example(sorry for the sand dune texture, it was all I had readily available where I am now....):
Grrr.... Can't get uploading to work correctly... probably my crappy machine's fault. Here is the result image.
And here is a link the GIMP .xcf file so you can deconstruct what I did and reproduce with your own stuff.
