Default January/February 2012 Lite Challenge Entry: Compass Rose

This is my first time submitting/uploading something. Feedback is much appreciated.

Any tips on how to add shading/highlights to give it some more "pop"? I'm still learning photoshop.

Hi and great you're joining in! One thing I notice is that you've got anti-aliasing (the blurring edges) going on the orange and light gray, but not on the dark grey. That throws the eye a bit. To add shading and highlights? Pop? Hmm ... that really depends on the effect you're going for. A simple and effective one is to boost the contrast. But I'm possibly not the best person to ask about photoshop, since I'm more of a vector lover ...

To highlight it more, you could use a thin dark line on the edges. To get the effect use "Inner Glow" on photoshop.

as an example this is a grey figure with and without the inner glow.

Here is an updated version with shadows and glows.

    Thanks for the tips.

Any tips on how to fix the aliasing issue?

You could select just the mid-grey section with the wand tool and give it a 0,5 px gaussian blur, I suppose ...

Hi Creios, really cool shape . I agree with Bogie for highlighting and Lukc fo blurring the dark grey part. And: if symbols are embossed, maybe they should cast little (more) shadow...

Hey everyone, thanks for the feedback.

I added more shadows and highlights. I still can't fix the anti-aliasing, even with the blur.

    Here is the latest version:

You might try this http://www.phong.com/tutorials/anti-alias/ and see if that helps fix your anti-aliasing problems. I tried it out on your compass rose and it seems to work. Probably better for you since you would have all the layers to play with.
