I enjoy listening to alternative & classic rock. Including Led Zeppelin.
I listen to all kinds of stuff. Everything from Franz Liszt to Creedence Clearwater Revival to Arch Enemy

My music collection is way too diverse... right now I'm doing work (not mapping) to Underworld's "Second Toughest in the Infants" and yesterday it was Tool's "Aenema"

I don't really listen to music while I'm mapping. Usually, I'm watching something online, such as on Hulu or Youtube.
BÖC! I could hardly concentrate on work while listen to them... They make me holding my pens at the top and transform my wacom and everything I can find into a drum set :-D
As to the music I prefer:
If I am working on details, I never listen to music.
But for the initial ideas and major layouting, style, colour changes, etc. I usually chose a genre/band/artist harmonising with the mood I try to create.
If I stare at the country long enough
I can prise it off the paper,
lift it like a flap of skin.

Agreed, that is a serious danger! It's a hazard i'm willing to brave though!
I'll admit lately I've switched to Alan Parson's Project though. I Robot, Stereotomy, Turn of a Friendly Card, Ammonia Avenue.. The older stuff.
(yes! I'm working on a map right now, and not the new york one either.. I'll be checking with the client soon to see about posting WIP's..)
My finished maps
"...sometimes the most efficient way to make something look drawn by hand is to simply draw it by hand..."
Stuff like 'The Dawn' by Dreamtale, to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin =D
Well, while mapping I enjoy some norwegian "quasi-jazz" like Jan Garbarek or Nils Petter Molvær.
But I could also listen to the non-lyric songs of artists like Nine Inch Nails or VAST. Despite their reputation, they can make very moody and atmospheric songs which enhance my world-envisioning capabilities.
