Agreed, but that wouldn't be shown with a drop shadow. Rather it should be shown with a highlight on the earth within the radius of the dirt of the hole. Here, I've cropped out the hole and done a quick light and shade modification. Simon, I really hope you don't mind, but it's easier to show than to describe.

Here's the modified hole with an overlay layer:

And here's the overlay I used to create it:

Here you can see the berm and the edges still blend into the texture and tone of the grass around. So the hole looks more integrated into the map.

No argument here. That's why I said he was on the right path. I love your modification. That is darn near perfect as an example. Simonutp will probably want to do that in his more photo realistic style so that it blends better, but an excellent example nonetheless.
Bill Stickers is innocent! It isn't Bill's fault that he was hanging out in the wrong place.

Why thank you I'm pretty glad with the way it worked out too. It can be made a little more photo realistic by taking a little more care over the light/shade overlay and using a harder brush to give sharper shadows and highlights. The texture is already photo-like dirt, so as long as the highlights and shadows look authentic, you should keep that level of realism in the final.

Not exactly a monster monster but this might look appropriate to your tunnels.

I just cleaned it up and made it a little more hairy.
