This update has a good color scheme for 1917.
I think it's looking really good Snodsy.

I think the decision to zoom in and add the inset was absolutely spot on. And respect for your type choices. I think it's not that common for maps around here to have blocks of text on them (though recent mapping challenges have been doing some great things with this element) so it's good to see that aspect thought out.

    Great work!

    cheers,

What an interesting idea, and some interesting posts on this subject... If you still have doubts about two design layouts of your map, go with the last one (no oranges) - it fits the period better, and it's more focused on the map itself with all those fantastic details. Perhaps that fade out effect on the top edge of the map looks too contemporary, did you try out some other options?

    ### Latest WIP ### Maybe a newspaper style approach. B&W style with dominate headline. Eliminated the fade, darkened up the blast area as well. Don't think the Black & White version loses anything, maybe even more ominous without color? HalifaxExplosion8GREY-01.jpg.

It's written Moznt Blanc in number 2. I like the newspaper idea.

I like the last two versions. Why not try a sepia aged paper for the newspaper version? Just a suggestion...

Heh, I had an image of a newspaper version in my head from the beginning... I like the headline and the overall style, and I agree with Ilanthar - sepia might add just the right touch to your map...

Hmmm, this is tricky. My first instinct was to say the coloured version, but the newspaper works really well too. I can't quite decide. Agree with the others though that a sepia-toned version might be a happy compromise. Too bad newspapers didn't offer coloured pics in those days.

Whichever you decide, it's looking fantastic!

Wip June/July'15 Lite Challenge - Halifax Disaster

    ### Latest WIP ### Added the sepia and used an old parchment to give it an aged look. The map is starting to loose it's impact a little not sure about B&W now, but it was a good study. Attached the Final Color map too.

I'm not too sure about the greyscale map with the sepia paper. You couldn't make the map sepia-toned too? The newspaper itself looks great in sepia. Much better than black & white. I love the grunged edges!
