Oh very nice start
I love the backstory, and the map is already looking really promising. I especially like the way you have represented the mudbanks
Avast, ye salt-blinded dog!
Have ye taken leave of yer senses intrely? Of course, I know the way to Red Water Retreat, as does any other sailor worth more 'n two barnacles! But I tell ye plain tho' ye earned it not, you'll stay as far as the winds will take ye from that accursed cove! Heed my words, lubber, if ye want to live!
Never has their been a more treacherous, unwelcoming place to drop anchor in all the world. Beware the captain who agrees to take ye, also. The only one's going to that lawless refuge are brigands, pirates and the devil himself! He'll open yer throat 5 miles out of port, drop ye down to visit Davy Jones and then laugh with his crew while he counts yer coin.
Alright, alright! If ye must go, take this map. It's the only one of it's kind, I tell ya that. In a skillful hand, it will give a captain and his crew a chance of dropping anchor in Red Water Bay with a whole ship underneath of him. What chance ye wonder? About that of a cripple in a school full a' hungry sharks, I'd wager!
Do yourself and yer kin a favor, ye blasted fool! Drop that map where ye stand, turn around and ...
...forget ye ever heard of Red Water Retreat!

It is an interesting start. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of map this becomes.

Wow, thanks for all the great encouragement, all of you!
I'm hoping to get a new WIP posted tonight, but we shall see. Thanks again!
Love it, aggred with Mouse, mudbanks are clean and awesome !
First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR to my CG friends! I wish all of you the best of luck in 2017!
Thanks very much Tenia and everyone else. Your encouragement got me through a few "is this really worth all the effort?" moments. lol! I'm sure everyone here has had those times, as well. Reading the value that others saw in my first post gave me the kick in the pants I needed to keep going. That being said, I'm happy to say that it's finally...
WIP Time!
In the following WIP picture, I added small rivers and streams, swampy regions, elevation shading to the land, and some of the mountains (a few more to come).
### Latest WIP ###
The VAST majority of the time on this map since my initial WIP was spent on mountains. That particular geographic feature may be the death of me. I believe I explored no less than 3 other styles before arriving on the one you see in this WIP. Aaaaaand I'm still not completely happy with them. BAH!
Far more fun than the mountains was adding in the little streams and rivers you see dotting the coastline. Perhaps I went a little overboard on those... I was having so much fun that I just couldn't stop myself! Still to come will be a few more geographic features, settlements, the "safest" route, and labels (which will be a bigger job on this map than usual).
Your comments, concerns, confessions, considerations, condescensions and coaxing are all welcome! Regardless thanks for having a look.
I can't wait to see the pirates !
