Post July / Aug '17 Lite Challenge: The Lost City of Pula Itézana

A treasure map is a functional document, often made under fairly poor conditions from the materials at hand. On the other hand, one of those materials is quite likely to be another map!

This is going to be a kind of palimpsest, a map which has been scrawled on repeatedly by successive treasure hunters. For the base map, I'm going with a late nineteenth century feel. Then I'm going to add a few layers of annotations in different hands, focusing on the dangers and challenges of the route. For now, I'm laying in some basic topography.

Ha, glad somebody likes the mountains! I think I'll want to give them another pass to tighten them up before I'm done, but they'll do for now.

I've filled out the topography a bit more, and started adding some labels as a style test. Also, the previous version was far too clean, so I've yellowed things up a bit.

Thanks all for the encouraging comments - I hope the final product lives up to them!

I've filled out the topography and the labeling, and I've added some rivers etc. I don't think the base map is quite finished, but it's done enough for me to move on and start scrawling some directions on top.

That looks pretty fabulous. A lot of times I'll see a thumbnail pic and think "Oh, that looks cool." ...But then when I click & enlarge it, it's disappointing. I'm glad to say your map does NOT fall into that category.

Very authentic and spot-on recreation of a late 19th/early 20th century atlas page. I think once this is finished it'll be a stunner. I already love it.

Thanks! Full disclosure, for the style I've been referring heavily to this 1896 map of Taiwan: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/histo...rmosa_1896.jpg

I'm not 100% happy about the fonts - I'm using Bodoni 72, and it's a bit delicate at smaller sizes. I think the italic looks good, but I might look at other options for the roman face. Maybe something with a bit less variation in weight, and chunkier serifs. It's hard to find stuff that looks authentically 19th century, but not fully distressed.
