Thread: Islands of the Sleepy Dragon

Map Islands of the Sleepy Dragon

Back during Inktober and Mapvember last year I ended up generating a ton of thumbnail sketches of all sorts.
One of them was for a little island that was in the rough shape of some sort of dragon.
It wasn't quite this particular version, as some things changed. Partly the scale.
The original sketch was to 'look' like a dragon, but not really BE a dragon.
But it turned into lands that are a living dragon. Albeit quite large.
And obviously very very sleepy. But dragons are sleepy, so I have been told.
But griffins tend to exaggerate, so who can be sure.

I had some fun with the names.

Oh... that's exactly why you're probably my favorite map maker ever. I'm just so admirative with every single detail : the idea, the linework, the colors, the subtle frame, the 'little rebels' at the bottom, even the names : just perfection. Kudos to you !
(Can't rep you that soon : what a shame !!).

    Thank you Beee
I used to think I liked making maps....
Then I had to accept that I LOVE making maps.
I feel inspired by all of the map makers around me and that I see online, you included.
It's a great time to be alive and to be making maps.

This is an amazing idea and such a beautiful execution. I like the names - I can imagine how much fun this was.

I so hate you Mr. Edward ( well not really, but maybe just a little jealous ). Lovely work.

hehe, I have felt that way too.
I've loved the work of many Guild members over the years.
And many before I was able to do these sorts of maps.

Amazing! Your maps definitely inspired me to get back into doodling maps as a hobby (I did it all the time as a kid, then adulting got in the way). I hope that, with enough practice, I'll be able to produce hand-drawn maps that are half as good as yours.

That's a beauty ! As if Griaule the dragon was a good land to live on Once again, the shading is exceptional, the colors sooooo sweet and you manage to add a dose of whimsical while still getting the most elegant map. I-LOVE-YOUR-MAPS !!! Did I shout it loud enough ?

John, isn't it time you stopped into San Francisco so I can eat your brain? Er, I mean, take you out to a nice surf & turf dinner in honor of your awesome and humbling talent?

    (Nice recovery there, eh?)

I already commented on this over on dA, but I just have to express my love for this in here as well. I just adore this little sleepy dude, chilling in the ocean and being all cute and mappy and all kinds of awesome. Your maps are a gift that just keeps on giving, dude!
