This is a beautiful map! With the size of the mountains, one has the impression that it is an immense territory! The different landscapes are very well rendered! I really hope you will be able to finish it, it is so beautiful that it deserves a little life: cities, roads, borders? In any case, your work is excellent!

Thanks JO, I appreciate the kind words.

Holy crap! This is fantastic! I haven't been around the Guild lately, so it seems I've missed a lot of stuff... How did you make the landshapes, if I may ask? They look absolutely fabulous. Nice work on the texture as well, and I have always loved your borders.

It's amazing how good you've gotten, kacey!

Thanks Kelleri I appreciate the kind words. For the land shapes I drew a quick sketch and literally cut out pieces of the earths coast from a shaded relief map and tried to make them fit. I got the earth map at naturalearthdata.com, they have high resolution maps that are free to use. I set the blend mode to linear burn, over one of Coyote Max's wonderful textures and fussed with the colour adjustments...I didn't paint any of the texture by hand it's purely a result of using linear burn over the premade texture... I hope that explains it well enough for you, but I'll give you fair warning if you decide to try this technique it took a seriously long time to make the pieces fit, which is why I haven't finished it yet.

Yeah, I was suspecting there was some real-world data involved... I mean lets face it, most of us can't hit this level of realism when drawing completely freehand. And yeah, that does sound like an incredibly time-consuming technique, but you can't argue with the results! Loving it so far, hope you are able to finish it at some point.

Thanks for taking the time to share!

Beautiful map! What is the advantage of using naturalearthdata.com over GoogleEarth?
  7. kacey
Thanks Swiss... I'm not sure what the advantage is as I've never used GoogleEarth to get real world shaded relief before. I like naturalearthdata.com because it has super high resolution images that aren't always easy to find else where. I'm not even sure if you can get shaded relief from GoogleEarth and if you can I don't know about they're copyright rules. Natural earth data allows me to use the images without restrictions so that's the main reason I use it.

Makes sense. I looked into that site and did find one disadvantage if anyone from the future reads this. You are basically given 3 options in terms of scale, and even the highest resolution is only good for regional maps. So if you wanted to zoom in farther than this, you may be better off with Google Earth. That's assuming I didn't miss anything on the site
