    Map Mota

    Heya Everyone,

    This would be my first time posting anything here. I've been drawing maps since I was very young but only in the last month have I tried anything more than pen and paper. I decided to remake an old map of mine I used for a D&D campaign a couple years ago. I used RPGMaker2003 (of all things) for that map, and used Photoshop CS4 for this new one. The world itself borrows heavily from the Phantasy Star series and The Gunslinger.

    Any feedback would be appreciated. I'm still really new to actually coloring things. I'm so used to just shading it with a pen, so I'm trying to find my style all over again

    Here's the background I gave it for the D&D Campaign:

    There was a time when you could see the desert starting to reclaim the planet, hovering just beyond the plains and rivers. That time is long gone. There are few things left that show how Mota once was, a tree here or there, some grass growing along the old highway. The only real reminder of how this planet used to be is slowly being sucked dry in the name of progress. Water shortages and crime are on the rise, once reclusive outlaws are gaining more ground to terrorize as the law breaks down across the desert, a factory roars to life deep in the dunes, an entire city disappears leaving seemingly no trace, unknown artifacts are discovered that couldn't possibly be from this world, a casino war erupts in the heart of mirth, a resistance movement plans it's attacks, tribals begin to return to their ancestral homes, reports of sewer creatures worshiping some sort of God surface, earthquakes devastate a small community, people are going missing from Fortune City, an unknown disease runs across the lands...

    And much much more.

    Very nice map. If I had one gripe about it then that would have to be the text. It looks a little too plain for my tastes.

    Also, given what the setting sounds like and the influences you're citing, it seems to me that it would be more suited to being run with the Deadlands system or something similar. How did you handle guns? Or do six-shooters have no place in this setting?

    Welcome... and have some reputation.
    I think your map is beautiful! Really unique style. I haven't seen anything resembling it on this forum. I also like the fact it looks to be set in more modern times (we get lots of fantasy here and some sci-fi).

    My only regret is that the map has a low resolution... I can't zoom in on the details.

    I did the text fairly quickly without giving it too much thought, but I see what you mean. The original map had a more 'Wild West' style font that I might use again, either way I think I will touch it up a bit, thanks!

    For the campaign, we used a slightly modified d20 system that pulled from various other things but mainly stock D&D. We created our own rules for firearms, which definitely included six-shooters (the theme was Wild West meets Steampunk) and unless I root through some old files I can't remember exactly how it works. I do remember kicking around Deadlands or something like it when we were concepting the system, but I don't remember anything more than that.

    Sorry! I normally make maps at much much higher resolutions, but this one I created at the stock 8 1/2 x 11 size in photoshop. I mainly did it that way so I could belt it out in an afternoon. Below is a work in progress from another map I've been doing off and on that is at a much higher resolution. I drew it out in pen first, scanned it in and now am toying around with the colors:

    Show us the big size...I wanna see those cities Awesome work. When posting, look for the button that says "Manage Attachments" and click on that. A pop up window appears so browse to your file and then click upload. It will upload just fine so long as it is under the file size restriction of 4.7 megabytes and the image size restriction which is around 32 million pixels...though usually I find that anything over 5000 square doesn't upload right.

    Its very nice. I really like the colours of the desert. looks very soft and cozy, nearly fuzzy. makes me wanna hug it
