Default Personal and or RP group website software

A question for all the expert's and old hand's,,

I've used many different website software over the years, WebEasy, Coffee cup (free version) Trellian, etc. Currently I'm playing with Tiddlywiki on my netbook, via DDNS with TZO.com and testing Drupal on my main comp by way of a local Apache server, (which is what's running on my Netbook)

The problem is, I've taken note that while the initial setup of tiddlywiki as a web page is easy,,it doesn't look or act the same over various browsers and sessions, (i've been fooled by my own sessions looking as i expected, only to realize it'd look diff to a new hit) Drupal is nice but i haven't found a good Tut for a Noob, It's always nice to see the beautifull websites the pros produce but, when they won't put out instructions for everyone else, why should everyone use it?

So, besides making regular old websites with stuff such as webeasy or trellian, or coffee cup, which isn't too bad, where's a guy to go for good tuts on tiddlywiki (seems easier) or Drupal (seems much more powerfull) I know there's an HTML 5 version of Tiddlywiki in the works btw

I know of some other stuff too, just kinda tryin to give a fansite type thread a kick in the pants, the pants without money to throw into a site.

Hmm, a web programmer myself i came across plenty of systems to use.
I think it depends on what you want... how big it will become and what criteria you need.

Typo3 for example is a cms (content management system), very powerful but very powerful and a bit too complex for simple and small websites. I think Drupal is the same...

Should this be a Webpage you adminstrate or should everyone in the group work on the output?

I was talking about a small RP group type of site, one where anyone who can or wants to steps up. I looked into Drupal since its free but yes, complex.

For years now we use MediaWiki (also used by Wikipedia) for exactly that purpose. Works great and over the years, we've developed some skill with that wiki-engine, including some customized extensions and so on.

I've used MediaWiki for that, albeit we used a freebie discussion board for conversing and storytelling. Okay, and I built a custom website too, but that came first - before we put up the wiki.
Main site for the world of Aurora
from which you get to the Aurora wiki.
Really, we could have made do with just the wiki, I bet. That world is in stasis now - active play fizzled out a while ago. That's happened before, and after some inactivity, a nucleus of interested folks would get some development and storytelling going again. If you're doing a cooperative venture, you want to ensure it can go on without any one person, even yourself. Long ago the original leader of Aurora left, assumed nobody wanted to continue, and deleted the web presence.... ThAt was a bit hard to recover from :-/. What you see now has been in place since maybe 2006. Umm - expect some broken links - players would host some info on their own websites, and some have dropped into oblivion.

The invision board was good for interaction among players. Nowadays I'd probably set up a bulletin board or blog on my own host, like I host the wiki. Many ISPs offer pretty much pushbutton creation of wikis, blogs, boards, what-have-you. We added a couple of extensions to mediawiki - 'confirm user accounts' and 'user merge and delete', and a few others that added interesting capability. It took configuring pretty tight user account permissions before we quit getting spam signups and posts - only logged-in approved users can edit at all. I totally understand why CG had to drop a wiki part - they're hard to run wide open yet safe from vandalism. ISPs fix it so updates to the eay-install apps are also easy.

As if that wasn't enough of a project, there was an even earlier geofiction world I helped with, Scandia. You'll see maps from both Scandia and Aurora in my CG albums. Both planets have been intentionally rebooted at least once - Scandia keeping the same base geography, and Aurora starting over with a wholly new map. (Fractal Terrains, YEAH!) I joined Scandia in 2002, so I've been at this online worldbuilding thing quite a while now.

Word to the wise - don't try to run TWO such worlds, if you have a life. :-/

Mediawiki is easy to administer, and fairly easy to keep backed up and spam-free. But I am a web professional by day, so take my acclaim with a grain of salt :-). On the user side it's definitely easy to edit and extend.

Well I'm not too familiar with allot of the sites mentioned on this thread, but if you are only planning to use a wiki-based site for your own role playing group/campaign, then you might want to consider the Obsidian Portal which is a nice Textile based wiki site that offers a limited range of HTML and CSS formatting as well. There are both free and paid accounts, the latter offering a few extra options and tons more data usage. I've personally used the OP to record notes for two different campaigns, as well as to construct my own campaign setting (if you are interested it's called Age of Legends). Don't know if this is what you are after or not, but it may be worth checking out.

    Cheers,

Bunduki, what MediaWiki extensions did you find useful for gaming? Something you developed?
