the two you posted are two different types
the first one is what i call the Frankenstein's monster type
it is parts of the earth cut/pasted in different ways

the second is a color gradient ( or a few gradients) and a shaded relief of the Black and White HeightMap
-- one of the really GOOD examples of this

    so you have a map
    on paper ?
    or on a computer ?
a outline of just the continents ?
or with rivers and wooded and desert areas and so on ?

This map was clearly done with a height map first so maybe you might like to investigate how to make your land using a height map.

A tip tho... dont do the rivers like this map or you will have a visit from the river police !
