Ever see those great maps with elevations found in old Nat Geo magazines and the like? Ever wonder how Swiss Cartography comes up with that amazing look? Well heres a PDF on how they do it, the down and dirty parts.
For those inquiring I was looking up how to do the swiss carto effect, and came across it, so no I have no secrets myself

That's very nice! I've been fiddling about with relief maps now for the past months and it's quite hard to get the right look. I'll have to try this out!
So far I've come up with this;
The Swiss topo style can be tough. The hardest part is the lighting. It's not a single direction as in the general synthetic lighting model for most of our tools. http://www.reliefshading.com/ has a great many useful discussions on the topic. Bernhard Jenny seems to be the most visible advocate of the traditional styling at the moment. http://www.flexprojector.com/ is one of his products and he has a number of others that assist with the basic Swiss style.
http://www.terraincartography.com/ also has some toys.
