Hi madlord,
welcome to the guild - jump into the tutorial threads and pick some that matches your software, then post in the WIP forums for help - you'll get there
Greetings! I've wanted to get into mapping for a while. Whenever I see a cool map, I usually think something like, "hey, I want to make something like that!" So, I decided to take the initiative and teach myself! Unfortunately, I'm not really sure where to start. D'oh!
I look forward to getting to know you guys!

Welcome to the Guild! Like tilt said, the Tutorial/How To section is definitely the place to start. Then (really, no matter how yucky you may feel your project looks) post up your work in progress in one of the WIP forums. You'll get great feedback that will help you improve your style much more quickly than you would on your own (at least, that's been my experience).

Welcome - looking forward to seeing the avatar for the Lord of Milk !
Where to start, pick a drawing package - PS, Gimp, PSP, Xara, Illustrator, Inkscape etc and then start, start a work in progress WIP thread and ask questions & check the tutorials.
