This map comes from Dwarve Fortress, a rpg/strategic game for linux, with a console interface : all the graphics are made in ASCII, including the maps!

Strictly speaking, that character set is not ASCII, it's a superset of ASCII called IBM code page 437
Oh, ASCII. Very fun. I've been considering making an ASCII map myself recently because I discovered a really fun "painting" program which anyone who is interested in doing so should check out. It is called ASCII Paint and it works like a traditional paint program only your brushes are ASCII characters.
