    Wip Trevellar worlds in alternate format

    I play Travellar and don't really like the world maps.

    They are ORANGE PEEL style and lack .....Eye candy!

    So I intend to stylize the world maps and add some BLING to this part of the game.

    I intend to use my laptop with another monitor hooked up to it to display info to the players so no printing will be necessary
    and the color will remain vibrant and easily changeable.

    Critique, observations and tip are appreciated

    I would say I plagiarized the look but sufficiently different to call it my own.

    The one prob I see with this style, is that it only shows the 1 side. The orange peel at least had the entire surface shown. Having said that, do you thing that you could do both hemispheres on the sheet? I do like this over the original style very much.

    The planetary image is pretty low quality. Was that a much smaller image that you scaled up? If you can find or make a higher resolution version of it, that will probably look better.

    The edges of the system bands circles are very rough.

    To give it just that little bit of extra sci-fi dazzle, try putting a very faint glow on all of the green to give it a phosphorescent look. If you don't have a glow tool, you can just make a copy of all of it, put a blur on it, and reduce the opacity to taste.

    You have a typo in the lower-right box: Syestem bands.

    Are you using Gimp for this? You might get nicer results from Inkscape, which will give you very clean sharp lines regardless of resolution. I used Illustrator for my own Traveller system maps: Hoffer’s Wake « Bryan Ray, Visual Effects Artist

    This is the concept for the layout, and I appreciate the input.

    I intend to get the general look before I sink any real time into the project.

    I too like the idea of and entire planets surface being mapped for logistics.

    But.... I am drawn to the art side of this project.

    The Travellar game I play seldom has need of an accurate world map.

    I guess I'm going for a SHOCK AND AWE style

    The planets do look a bit as if they were low res images that have been scaled up. Not sure what your creation method for them is but there are several great planet tutorials for Photoshop over at Deviantart that may offer you tips on how to improve them. In addition, you might want to think about adding a bit more shading and atmosphere to the planets (a discussion on how to do so is included in several of the tutorials at DA). The overall layout is nice though.

    Ah, I hadn't realized that it was a mock-up. In that case, disregard comments about fuzzy lines and aliasing, though my recommendation of vector artwork stands. Particularly if you come up with an easy-to-run pan and zoom display interface that will take svg. Being able to zoom in without losing quality is stellar, if you'll excuse the pun.

    You can always add a different style of map later on if you need the entire planet's surface for some reason. That may or may not be an issue depending on the style of your game. My players tend to avoid planetary surfaces, preferring to stay in space as much as possible, so I don't really need entire planetary maps most of the time. They get all crazy about detailed star systems, though.

    WOW! these are some GOOD tips!

    I will start on these TUTs and see if I can produce a higher quality mock up / template.

    Also thinking of making a VERY large star-field background so so I can pan around and the profiles wont have identical backgrounds.

    Some adjustments made from the above tips and critiques.

    I am submitting this one in a higher resolution so I can get better critique.

    Still just finding a look I like before proceeding with this HUGE project.
