I decided to get rid of the violet background and to use instead a more conventional one.
I tried some self made brushes for mountains and mushroom-trees.
My newest project: planet Venus, from the same universe like my Mars map, however in a completely different style.
So far I have the two hemispheres with the main land masses. The great mountain ranges will be placed mainly in the middle of the continents and great islands.
Instead of green plants like on Earth this Venus has plants with a violet colour as the dominant form of flora.
Next step will be adding mountains and forest. However, I am still indecisive which style to use. At the moment I tend to old-style map symbols instead of a satellite/realistic style.

I think this version is a great improvement over the other one, but the scale is way off. That may be intentional, but it seems rather jarring for a non-fantasy map.

Thanks.
This was more a test for the brushes. I will scale down the size If I decide for this style.
The mushroom trees are awesome. Great for Venus...or an Underdark map. I like the map projection for this project, better than the 2x1 rectangle IMHO. It's very Space 1889.

Thanks. Then I'm on the right way.
I scaled down the mountain and tree brushes.
I was not really satisfied with my earlier results and did a complete redesign. Instead of symbols I go for a satellite/realistic view now.
Placed some deco on the map, too.
I have a preference for the original version, but this new one is nice, too. The forests look less varied now, though. I liked that the previous version had obviously different forest environments.
I added more detail to the mountains and gave the land mass more violet hue to show areas with dense flora.
Additionally more map deco, although I'm not quite happy with the sub-orb destroyers in the upper left; maybe I replace this one.
