aha the odd conical perspective distortion in the first image in post 5 explains it
the ratio of Km / degree is vastly different in the "Prince Edward Isl " area on the east coast that it is on the Seattle area on the west coast

For your metro areas, what about, in addition to your latest version, adding a pattern of diagonal lines or cross-hatching?

OK, your comments are comforting !

As THW suggested, I added slight diagonal lines on those metro areas too. I like it but hope the little ones are still easy to spot. And of course, a bit more of colors!

More colours and cities. I changed the borders to something more visible (I think).

I'm not sure about the red pictos, but here's the last version... Now labelling and borders I guess

Maybe a brighter red and/or an outerglow and/or a white or light color circle background to make the m clearly legible? Otherwise it just looks great.

Wonderful color scheme and I dig the old book illustration feel.

    Thanks a lot!

Is this better? Also trying a font/style for the states names...

I added the forgotten metro labels and the key. Close to finish, so don't hesitate to point what could be improved!
