If you are into 3d stuff check out the link on here or look up the free Bryce 7 downloads you can get this month. Pretty awesome stuff but I don't know how to use it yet.
I've tried Poser before, years ago--Bryce is going to be a heck of a learning curve, but if I can handle that, the results certainly look worthwhile. If I remember correctly, Terry Amthor used Bryce (or something similar) on some of his Kulthea projects.

While I agree that it's quite different, it's still a very sticky wicket.

But leaving aside that quagmire: may I recommend you try out Inkscape as well? It's a vector program and with the rgith symbol sets you can replicate a lot of the functionality of CC - plus do a lot more as well.
I tried Illustrator several years ago, and really stank at it. However, it's certainly worth looking at, and as I'm in the queue for disability, it's not like I don't have time on my hands!
