    I use a custom-made brush in Illustrator. It ends up looking like a series of m's all run together, with the humps of the m's facing the open ocean and the points facing the lagoon. You can see it (not very well, however, due the poor resolution) on the maps I've attached.

    If you want photo-realistic, then the Great Barrier Reef looks like this. (See Attached).

    Scale is 1km per pixel

    Anyway you could show a 'zoomed in' picture of one of those reefs?
