This really is an exceptional map! I love the whole hand drawn feel of it. Would be very interested in reading more about your process, even beyond the already excellent WIP thread.

Thanks for all the kind comments about these maps. I'll definitely try to put together a more complete tutorial on how these were done. I need to create a new encounter map for my next D&D adventure so I'll make sure to create some notes as I go along. In lieu of a tutorial I'll upload the .xcf file for the pirate cove map here. I have had to shrink it considerably - to 25% of its original size - to fit it under the upload requirements. The original .xcf is 75MB, 1000 times the allowed size for this months mapping challenge!

Anyway, hope this is of some use to those who use Gimp and are curious about the methods used in this map:

I noticed a couple of glitches on the maps I posted as 'finished' so here's a cleaned up version:

Also, for those who are interested - this map was used to map the pirate and bandit camp in the first section of the Mysteries of the Moonsea adventure. The original map for this adventure can be found here.

And I hav also managed to extract a few more of the seperate images from the map on the request of some of those over at rptools.net. Here's a link to the gallery with the different objects, and here's a selection of a few of them:
