    Link Font Library: Fantasy Maps

Here is the first of what I hope is a large community-compiled library of favorite fonts for use on fantasy maps.

When you post your favorites, please limit to a reasonable number (say 3 -4 or so); thereby this literally will both be a truly "favorite font" thread and the user won't be overwhelmed with too many choices.

    Anglo-Saxon Caps http://www.abstractfonts.com/font/1982

    Aniron http://www.thehutt.de/tolkien/fonts.html

Caeldera http://www.blambot.com/fonts.shtml (scroll down in the left window to "Title Fonts")

    What a great idea!

I really like that "Aniron" font and I think I might steal it.

So I think I got all of mine at www.fontfreak.com because they have a large selection of both Mac and PC fonts available.

BtW: Does anybody know of a dingbat font for map icons? Like a font that has castles, towers, cities, boats, sea monster, compass rose, etc, etc... I think that would be really useful because of a font's vector scalebility.

Caeldera is certainly one of my favorites! I used to run FlatEarth.com before it degenerated and I sold it (you should see who owns the domain now! ), and Nate Piekos at blambot made that font to honor the collaborative world-building project we had there. The world project name was Caeldera, of course.
I noticed Joshua_101 also has Flat Earth Scribe, another Piekos creation for FlatEarth.com. Nate is a really great resource for fonts, and blambot is my favorite font site.

I ran the FlatEarth.com site for over 10 years, and in it's golden age it was a great place. Sadly, in later years it was overrun with munchkins (and I was overwhelmed with Real Life) and I decided to give it up. It had a good run, though.

Welcome to the guild FlatEarth! In your honour (well not really!) I think we should make this font thread a sticky - it's too useful to let flow down the threads. Caledra is one of my favourite fonts, although I haven't had the right context to use it properly but it's one I always consider. Please make more!

While they might not necessarily be "favorite" fantasy fonts, I have created 2 fonts several years ago for my game and some projects. I've never distributed but I'd be willing to share them if anyone is interested.

Anyway, my favorite fonts depend on the purpose of the map.

For maps that are just for show, I like using handwritten like fonts. For sci-fi based maps on starcharts and stuff, I use what looks like a LCD font.

Functional in-game maps are usually done with 10 or 12 pt Verdana.

For more symbolic things, a nice font is Bullet Balls AOE on this page (plus a lot of other interesting symbols there.

    Attached is a sample...

And some of the other dingbat/wingding fonts have basic symbols, like a plain compass rose....

You can't go wrong with the Crazy Diamond font line (don't worry, it's short). They're all historical fonts. You've probably seen them before, actually, since the creators also created many of the paper props from the Harry Potter films (Italic Hand is Dumbledore's penmanship).

17th Century Print is excellent for map notes on a legend.

The Paul Llyod collection is also worth browsing:

I especially like Graphis and Hominis (I can't direct link, but you can get to them easily from the above link).
