Map Quick and Dirty Random Map - The Lia'eth Coast

I wanted to make a simple little map in GIMP, basing it on my random coastline tutorial.

    The Lia'eth Coast

This is the result of about 3 hours work, start to finish, completely in GIMP.

The initial random coastline was made using my random coast method. All of the patterns, textures, etc. are filters, with no "artistic effort" (i.e. painting/drawing) involved. This includes random mountainous areas.

The city markers are wingdings, (thanks to whoever suggested that recently), placed by hand. The roads and sea-routes are stroked paths. I used displacement mapping on the road afterward to make it look more jiggly looking.

The compass rose and the faint crest behind the title are both from fonts, as well.

A three hours' time well spent! Nicely done. I really think those random coasts turned out well! Great test run!

This map was done with an action in the same way. Unfortunately I don't have this action anymore. I might have a go at recreating it at the weekend...

    Hey man,

Nice map, its got alot of neat ideas that i may incorporate into some of my maps, like using the wingdings for cities and the see routes are a nice touch too. I'm not really sure how you did it, as my maps are all worked out very differently (hand drawn and then painted) This looks like a neat way to tackle a map, and MUCH less time consuming.
