As a city Venice is superb. No cars (and - I think, no bicycles after a certain (young) age) means that transport is all on boats or feet. Without "proper" roads for cars etc the place is a maze of great alleyways. My advice is - get off the touristy "track" and dive into the "back streets" where the washing lines hang out across the canals... make sure you have a good sense of direction!
