Staring up at that learning curve...
I thought I'd just pop my head in and say hello
I'm quite a newcomer to the whole fantasy-cartography thing - I was creating an RPG world with a few friends and we realised that it'd be a little easier to define races and borders if we had an idea what the place physically looked like. "No worries" said I, whipping out photoshop I thought this would take about half an hour.
That was about four weeks, 30 appalling maps and many, many late nights ago.
Luckily I found this haven for the weary mapmaker along the way and while at first I was a bit over-awed by what the people on here were accomplishing I decided that I'm going to work through the tutorials and then have another crack at it.

Heya. Welcome to the Guild! I think you've come to the right place. Start up a WIP thread with your problem map and we'll see if we can help. And, as Redrobes said, the How To section might be the absolute best place to start. Chances are somebody already has some step-by-step help ready and waiting for you.

Pick a tut, any tut, and you'll have a base map done in one night. Making it pretty will take some more time but that just depends on how much you like to tinker.
