The Cartographers’ Guild is a forum created by and for map makers and aficionados, a place where every aspect of cartography can be admired, examined, learned, and discussed. Our membership consists of professional designers and artists, hobbyists, and amateurs—all are welcome to join and participate in the quest for cartographic skill and knowledge.
Although we specialize in maps of fictional realms, as commonly used in both novels and games (both tabletop and role-playing), many Guild members are also proficient in historical and contemporary maps. Likewise, we specialize in computer-assisted cartography (such as with GIMP, Adobe apps, Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, etc.), although many members here also have interest in maps drafted by hand.

... concerning the text, I must admit that PS isn't the best tool - Illustrator makes way better text. BUT it is certainly possible to make texts in photoshop (believe I did a ok job in my mountain realms - in my finished maps) - the better the resolution the better the text. Try using effects to help, you can use a small drop shadow to help with light text visibility, you can also use stroke to help see the text. I believe it will also help if you work the with clouds I mentioned earlier. Personally I don't like hotel-text (letters standing on top of one another), I much prefer to rotate the text layer instead.
