I like the first one with the circle.

    The circled one isn't legible.
OK, thanks for the views. I'll try a bigger circle with the same font... and I'll play with the color or opacity. The white seemed a good way to get "contrast" while avoiding confusion with the black labels, but, yeah, why not ?

A question - why did you decide on pink for the major roads?
Ha! I must admit that I've done purple roads first. Then, playing with layer blendings, it ended pink. And, well, it doesn't look that bad, I think. The main purpose here is to spot them easily.

Is this in PS? I noticed that the train tracks were a hatch pattern. I made a train track brush for you if you want one. Carto brushes - caterpillar ridges and train tracks
That looks awesome (both caterpillar and tracks)! Very nice of you to propose them. Sadly, I'm working on Paint Shop Pro 7 and don't have Photoshop. I have GIM, though.

Here's a new test with a similar color and a bigger circle. Better?

That's more pleasant visually than the previous version but maybe just a bit too transparent for readability

Still struggling with labels... Anyway, here's a test for administrative areas (regions colored, and clear hatched underlying for districts), plus a test with the excellent J. Edward's railroad brush. What do you think?

I have to work on a small size for the railroad, and I'm afraid that it doesn't do justice to the brush...

OK, I changed my mind about a few things after a break! So, no coloured regions, I just kept the district underlying. And, I chose another way to represent railroads (inspired from the Gotham City of Cereth), more readable at this size in my opinion. I guess I'll have to do another map to use the good J. Edward brush!

I've add a darker shadow under those damn numbers, hope it's more easier to read. A few corrections on this (East LA and Sepulveda Basin were missing) and the future placement of the downtown insert.

Just a little bit more. Working on the last quarter now... then, I'll still have to do the downtown map and the special locations icons to put all over the map (plus the border, oh my...!).

Impressive.. really a huge work! readabilty is almost perfect for me, and that's not a small thing with so much labels. You've come to a point where i can't really find constructive critics, so i'll just tell keep up the great job!
