Looking forward to this! It's always interesting to see your process.
The first thing that comes to mind so far is this : a lot of big inland-lakes (?) ... depending on the scale of the map, it's a bit unlikely.

Highlighting the main area works btw very well in this case, focus is really on the land (my eyes just wandered once to the edges of the paper). =)
You beat me to the answer The dark feel is intended here.

Probably because what you think is land is in fact water

4th stage : Defining landmass/water by adding desaturated blue paint with low opacity on water and a soft innerglow on lands. Also switching the coastlines from black to brown.

My head hurts. It looks beautiful, but I really thought water / land was the other way around.

It is nice to see your process again. Speaking just for myself, now, but I think I appreciate your maps more when I see how they came together. It also always makes me want to try and imitate the style. I agree with foremost about the angularity, but it doesn't seem like an important issue. I also wanted to ask where you get the parchment texture, but I see you've already answered that question.

This is shaping up really well. One point to make: I'm not sure how good it will look having the mountains, forests etc. going right to the edge of the parchment. Are you going to give it a bit of a margin or border?

I understand that point, I've been debating with myslef about it aswell I finally decided to see how this will go this way. Since the colors will be overlaid by the texture, the dark edge of the frame should "smooth" the parts all around the frame. I might change my mind at the end though

lol...absolutely, you got me. But now i have to say that i think the landshape overall had a more interesting layout to my eyes in that "wrong" version.

I have to admit, to watch you work is inspiring. It is almost like Bob Ross. "So we are just going to put a feel trees here...". Wait? How did you do that? Just dip your brush in some paint and bang it against the canvas? lol
