Something witty and pithy
It occurred to me that I have a digital camera and some green construction paper, so I grabbed some books off the shelf and placed them over the paper, then turned the green transparent (had to hand-touch up a few things because one of the covers was green... whoops!)
I didn't work through the entire shelf, but how does this look to others?
Three different bookcases, can't decide which I like best.
I recently just had a run in with some bookshelves for a map I was working on for my game. I came to the conclusion that bookshelves are only really interesting from the side. My solution? just place books/scrolls randomly "on top of the book shelf". It isn't very accurate in terms of how they actually work, but it makes it 1) clear what they are and 2) interesting to look at.
Those look like they might be from the Dundjinni's forums (I love that place too!) Try searching for "book" or "bookshelf" or "bookshelves". I found some ones I liked over there.
On carpet: I think most older libraries had patterned marble floors. Think Indian Jones and the Last Crusade. "'X' marks the spot..."
The middle set of bookshelves are from the dundjinni forums, the outer two I made myself... the books are actually digital photos of books I own. You may be right about just putting stuff on top and leaving it at that...

There are a few things I can think of off the top of my head that you might want to look into, namely light and your bevels(in relationship to your light). Look in the center room for example. You have the light on the side table with the shadow in the South East. Yet your chairs have the shadow on the bevel in the North East. The center circular table has no shadow at all and the book on top seems to blend into the table as a design rather than standing out as a totally separate object. Not sure if this is due to the objects you are using and how they are pre-made, but it's something to think of. You might also want to do a tiny bit of shadow around the interior walls with a gradient blur to add some depth to the walls.
I really like the book shelves on the right, they just need some more variation. It's a lot of work, but with the fairly low number of book shelves you have total, you might want to consider making each one as a seperate object to make them all unique. Also, there is nothing to prevent having different size cases. Given the scale of the chairs, the existing cases are no more then 4-6 feet in length, so perhaps long singular rows may be appropriate.
