Default August 2015 Entry: Victorian encyclopedia style

For this monthly challenge, I decided at last to get my stuff together and make the tutorial about that "Brockhaus" victorian encyclopedia style that I worked on for some years now.

It is rather in-depth and will take some effort and some serious manual work in places to make such a map, but I'd say that the end result will be worth it.

So, for me to remember all that detailed stuff and for all the forumites who want to do realistic maps in such a style, here is the first teaser.

First part will deal with the paper texture, the map borders and the graticule.

(Edited to add: this tut will be for GIMP basically. It shouldn't be too difficult to adapt it to PS though.)

Me too. I was beginning to worry that we wouldn't have any contestants this month. Hopefully others will come out of the woodwork as well.

Next part will deal with drawing the outline of the map, rivers and borders.
Then we will add colour: prepare a template and draw coloured borders in different styles and variants.

Good idea. However, for being a tutorial, there are quite a few steps missing from the first image to the second. For someone who does maps regularly it is clear what you did, but for a beginner??? Someone who starts with mapmaking would be lost.

Yeah, this isn't really a tutorial so much as what a map looks like when it's created with a tutorial...

I think he planned to explain after the map is finished.

Yeah. I was under the impression that the pictures are just teasers (and to help him sort out the steps) until he posts the actual tutorial file. But if it is just pictures then, yeah, pretty slim.
