    Post Rose Compass

My favorite element to draw is the rose compass. This is a hand drawn compass. I plan to work on many more, hopefully increasing the complexity and refinement.

You'll have to excuse the cat fur in the image. I didn't notice it was there, trapped in the varnish, until I looked at the digital image. I'll have to edit it out in Photoshop later.

That looks nice. What, aside from varnish, did you use to make it?

It's pencil with a watercolor wash to tint it. There's a little oil pastel in there too.

After I lay down the color I use a thin wash of gesso to cover some of the elements and then draw back over some of the lines to pull them back out. The final touch is actually some old yellowed galkyd I have that I use to sort of stain the piece.

And, of course, cat hair. I feel your pain. There's enough cat DNA in my paintings to clone every cat I've ever come into contact with.

Interesting. I thought there was some gesso but I've never used it in that fashion before; it looks effective. Now I just wonder what sort of map this would go with. Are you planning one for it?

I do have an idea for a map to use it in. But every time I sit down to work on the map I wind up working on another compass!

Haha Well, if you do manage to make a map for the compass, I will enjoy seeing it. But compasses are also nice.

Thanks! I'm really enjoying being a part of this forum and look forward to actually drawing and sharing a fur-less map!
