This could be in a book Diamond.

I do like the background you've used. It's got a lovely textured feel without being too dominant, and it works beautifully with the pinkish tones.

I tried to add a little more 'oomph' to the nation names (not convinced it worked; will experiment further - maybe a change of font is in order), added a couple more names, just dinked around a bit. I should have more time this weekend to really get things moving. The plan is to show contested areas, sites of historic battles, army placement, etc. What I've been showing you so far is half-size of the actual map, so more detail will be forthcoming.

I think the font looks great. I can suggest a couple of things to add oompf ...

    1. You might try 1px stroking the letters with the same color to make them slightly bolder.
    2. You might add some very subtle outer glow, since some do get lost against a busy background of the same hue.
    3. You might try a very small subtle embossing.

I did those things on this map

and I think it made the labels really stand out well against a mixture of backgrounds.

I'll try those suggestions out and see where they take me. Thanks, Chick!

This is coming along nicely. I like the simple color palette. The fonts look good but the particular style that you have going on the nation text sort of gives the impression that the labels are out of focus. Otherwise, looking great.

Do you mean that pinkish outer glow/stroke I put on there? Yeah, after looking at it again I don't really care for it either. I think there's one too many fonts, also. I guess I'll change the font I was using for the seas to the one I'm using for the cities.

This is starting to shape up now, I think. Any thoughts on the nation names? I think they stand out better now without looking too busy.

Looks great, the new labels are a lot better, and the sidebar ads a lot to the overall look.

Does Lake Gathos empty in two directions or is that a road?

The only suggestion I have here is to increase the water/ocean contrast. Right now it is close enough to the other countries that I thought I was looking at other nation states rather than seas and oceans. I like this a lot, I feel it both tells a story about the place and looks visually impressive!

Gondurin is sort of on the nose for Gondor/Gondolian. That could be just because I read the Simarillion recently though.
