    Wip Gulf of Alaska

Here's another WIP for my 'Annual Challenge'. The challenge has closed, so I'm creating a new thread. Earlier WIP's can be found here.

This is my first print. The aquatint I did on the mountains came out much darker than expected. That's ok because it can be lightened up with burnishing. Less ok, because I won't have a chance to actually do that... because the class is over and access to presses is not easy to get. This will probably be the one and only print. I still have text to add to it, so it is still definitely a WIP, albeit nearing 'finished' status. Although there are things I'd like to see fixed, I am incredibly excited about continuing to make maps with this technique, and am really happy with the turn out. Also very encouraging to see others excited about the idea. Thanks. Also, I have learned a lot, and future maps are gonna be better .

If anybody has critique to offer, even though I can't implement the changes I'd love to hear your thoughts.

lol, btw, first scan was 0.4 MB over the size limit. Wah Wah

OKAY! I've been deterred from the problem because of ink problems (mostly other stuff). I was having problems with the ink clogging the nibs, turns out all I had to do was add some water, but what I did instead was throw out the ink and take no action for several months. Well I did my research finally and purchased two new inks that I'm excited to use. Hopefully this project will be completed this month. I'll be sure to post it when it's done!
    Cheers,

Had to go back and look at what technique you were talking about and kudos to you - that's really cool doing an etching for a map. Its looking wonderful

WIP up close shot of some of the text. All I have left to do is the title block, nervous I'm going to screw it up!

This piece is amazing, and I look forward to seeing more work like this! I love how the border and artwork integrates into the rest of the map.

I say embrace it! Any little goofs are just quirks of the mapmaker.

Got down to it and did the title block last night. Damn was I stressed! I wish I had access to a press so I could have had more copies to experiment with. One day... I will.
Here be the finished copy. I've also added it to an album here.
