Thread: Where to find Wilbur?

    Default Where to find Wilbur?

Long story short, I've got a very long, bad history with downloads, but the map I'm working on right now will need Wilbur, and I'm not sure where to find it that A: won't give my comp a terrible virus and B: actually gives me Wilbur.

    Anyone know?

http://www.fracterra.com/software.html is the new and (hopefully) permanent home of Wilbur.

The new owner (Mediacom) of the old ISP (Ridgenet) decided that it wasn't worth their time to keep a virtual server active to keep running a 20 year old collection of what was mostly personal web pages. Sadly, I have no way to update the thousands of links to the old Wilbur site that are still out there. Heck, I can't even get the ones here at the guild updated!

Where are the links that need updating? (Well, the main ones at least.) I could probably look into changing them for you.

EDIT: I just changed the link in this post. Are there others that need editing? (NB I removed the examples links since they were broken. Are there new links that should be added instead there, or is this bit basically obsolete?)

I appreciate the update on the main list of software. Unfortunately, there are links scattered in tutorials all over the place (a search for http://www.ridgenet.net/~jslayton using the guild search turned up almost 200 hits). If there was a way to find and replace "http://www.ridgenet.net/~jslayton" with "http://www.fracterra.com" then that would solve the problem.

The most-used tutorials seen to be http://www.cartographersguild.com/sh...ad.php?t=18280 and http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=3822

I'm not sure what links were there, but they are probably the individual elements in http://www.cartographersguild.com/sh...ad.php?t=29412 or the tutorials at http://www.fracterra.com/wilbur.html (same thing).

Hmm, I see what you mean about scattered links! *gulps* Not sure whether a Find & Replace type of action is possible. Only an Admin could do it, I believe.

I searched through Arsheesh's thread and tutorial, but I don't believe there are any links to Wilbur at all there (at least, searching for 'ridgeway' returned nothing). The second thread you linked to (How to get your rivers in the right place) had one link buried in the 11th page, but I updated it anyway.

I'll edit the main software listing again and add a link to your 'Fun with Wilbur' thread. Otherwise, I'll try to keep an eye on any old threads I stumble across that has the old link. And perhaps anyone reading this who spots an old comment of theirs that contains the out of date information could update their own posts too? Pretty please?

Interesting. The Eriond tutorial pops up on the guild search.

The overall google search for http://www.ridgenet.net/~jslayton turns up more than 3700 hits, many of them long-abandoned. There is no way that I can fix those and no way to put a redirect on the original ridgenet site.

You got me curious and I've dug into it further and I realise my mistake. I was only searching the comments text for the word 'ridgenet' but in fact there were a couple of embedded links. I should really have searched the page source. However Google's helped me out, and I've now tracked down a couple of comments in Arsheesh's thread that have the old link. In fact .... one of them's from some guy named Waldronate!! Check out your comment here. Would you like to edit that? There's another one later in the thread that I'll update, and I'll poke around some more tomorrow and see if there's anything else I can do.

OK, I got it. Silly me.

I think that fixing the links to the more popular tutorials and in the master software list will probably get most of the traffic. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
