February 2016 Challenge: Hogwarts
Always wanted to visualize this better than reading words in the novel. I found a picture of the miniature used in the movie and the original sketch map by JKR, so that's what I started with.
I expect to finish a cliff below the castle, and then add labels for the castle buildings and locations.

You should maybe use a parchment-like background so that it is similar to that magic map harry uses in the movies (not read any of the books but I did watch all of the movies)

Next update. I rearranged the parts of this a few times, trying to find a way to get so many labels in without trying to put them on top of the picture. I think this works now, what do you all think?

I think that version works better. It seems to 'flow' more naturally - I sort of automatically look to the left side first when I look at an image (the product of being raised reading English, no doubt), so I see the top-down schematic first and then naturally want to look to the drawing to see how it translates. I like it.
Thanks, Diamond! I played around with a lot of different layouts and arrangements, including vertical format, mostly looking for a good way to do the labeling. When I finally decided on the vertical lines method, and therefore a horizontal map, I put the grounds map on the left for exactly the reason you said
